Grimes Bird Of Paradise
|Model:||Bird Of Paradise|
This is a guitar I built for George Benson in 1994 – the second B.O.P. I built for him, and the last of 4 guitars I made for George. When I visited him in Phoenix a few years back, I offered to buy it back from him. He refused. A year later he called me and offered to sell it back, and so the homing Bird Of Paradise has flown back to it’s nest. This guitar is made with two arched plates (carved) of Quilted Maple, with a chambered Honduras mahogany core. It is about 70% solid. Smaller than a Gibson 335, larger than a Les Paul, but considerable lighter (7.5 lbs). This guitar has a 25 ½” scale, 1 ¾” nut, 2.10” at the 12th fret, 2.10” string spacing at the bridge (adjustable Schaller roller saddles for any desired spacing). Double acting truss rod. front and back ebony peghead veneers, Mother Of Pearl and abalone block inlays, celluloid bindings, sunburst finish, DiMarzio pickups, , volume and tone for each pickup, three way switch, gold Schaller tuners, ebony pickguard (removable), gold Schaller fine-tuning tailpiece. Body lower bout is 14 3/16”, body depth is 1 ¾”. It has a Calton custom fitted case.
